My name is Kiku, which is the word for “Royal Chrysanthemum” in Japan, the place of my birth.
My human companion and I met at Marin Acura, just north of San Francisco, in 1987. I was very young. I had been only 12 miles. She had looked carefully at other breeds --German, Swedish, Bavarian – but when we met, it was love at first sight.
On our first trips together people would stop and ask what I was. (Now people say that I am in “beautiful condition.”)
I have been many places – to mountains and deserts and cities and forests and flatlands. I have been north and south and east. I cannot go west because I would sink. My companion and I are together almost every day. We do errands. We play. We go over big bridges and through tunnels. She says I am very important to her. I even have my own allowance.
I have had many adventures. The most exciting occurred in October of 1989 when I was just two. I was on the off ramp of a freeway 40 miles from home. Suddenly I wobbled. I wobbled again and again. She thought I had two flat tires. As I arrived onto the business street, I saw glassy-eyed people wandering about. And broken glass covered the sidewalks.
It was an earthquake! A big earthquake. It took a long time to get home. One of the freeways was closed and there were many, many cars so I could only crawl along. Some cars were pulled over by the side of the freeway because they could not get fuel. It was dark. The only lights were headlights. We could see fires in the distance. Finally we arrived at the Golden Gate Bridge. Its lights were on! We were safely home.
Because of my superior care at Marin Acura, I am in excellent health. I am lucky to have many human and car friends who help celebrate my birthday every year on March 15th.
